Your situation

Petrochemicals are produced and processed in refineries and dedicated plants which are large industrial complexes with an extensive pipe network carrying streams of fluids between chemical processing units.

Flow metering on some pipes may not have been considered during commissioning. The installation of a new flow meter may also have become necessary after the plant has been extended, after new production processes have been introduced or after new regulations have come into effect.

For whatever reason a flow meter has to be retrofitted, its installation should not stop ongoing production processes
and not bear the risk of leakage at any time.

Secondly, flow meters should either be resistant against the often corrosive fluids or - even better - not be in contact with them at all. Last but not least, every flow meter, which is going to be installed within hazardous areas, must be Ex approved.

Our solution

Clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters from Katronic have proven to be ideal solutions for metering applications within the petrochemical industry.

They can be installed to pipes of any common material including various plastics and metals (incl. duplex steel and lined pipes).
As the ultrasonic sensors are installed to the pipes by clamping them onto their surface, there is no need to open them, no risk
of leakage or contamination and no pressure drop at any time.

The sensors cover pipe diameters from 10 mm up to over 3,000 mm (0.4” > 118”) and withstand pipe temperatures of up to 200 °C and more.

The KATflow clamp-on flow meters are capable of measuring any liquified hydrocarbon including liquid petroleum gas (LPG), petrol, diesel, kerosene, fuel and lubricating oils, methanol, ethanol,
Naphta and many more.

In addition to that, Katronic flow meters can also be used to monitor the flow rates of liquids related to the production process such as acids and industrial waste waters.

As required by the petrochemical industry, Katronic offers flow meter solutions for permanent installation in hazardous areas:
The transmitter enclosure and clamp-on sensors of the
KATflow 150 Ex are ATEX approved for installation in
Zones 1 and 2.

The process output and serial interface options available on the KATflow 150 Ex enable it to be embedded into process control systems. As additional feature, Katronic offers a non-invasive concentration measurement function for the KATflow 150 Ex.
