Marine & Shipbuilding

Katronic clamp-on flowmeters are in use in many areas of marine engineering whether on commercial or military vessels.

The majority of the applications for the KATflow ultrasonic flowmeters in the marine and shipbuilding industries are for monitoring of the various ship´s resources. In fact, part of the history of the development of ultrasonic flowmeters results from initial evaluation and testing work done for the shipbuilding industry.

In the early 1980´s it was noted that in the later stages of a ship´s commissioning there was a need for a portable tool to properly determine the flows of water, cooling liquids and fuels around the various systems. This resulted in several institutions working on the prototypes of the earlier generation of non-invasive flowmeters.

Since this time things have changed with permanent ultrasonic flowmeters being used on more critical pipelines such as for fuel and oil consumption. The KATflow 150 has been used for continuous monitoring purposes in engine rooms and the KATflow 200 for spot checking and maintenance work on fuel, oil and water lines.

Work has also been done on various military applications such as helping with the monitoring of the propulsion, stability and power systems. Furthermore, the KATflow 200 is playing a key role in the development and testing of modern ships fire extinguishing systems.

Typical Applications:

• Fuel oil consumption metering
• Potable water flow measurement
• Ballast control systems
• Fire system testing
